Papers, 1897-1946, 1911-1946 (bulk).

Nelson's papers refer to his archaeological excavations and research across North America, especially British Columbia, Alaska, the pueblos of the Southwest, and the Aztecs of Mexico; Spain; and the Philippines. His papers consist of field notes with photographs and illustrations, journals maintained in the field, published maps used in field work, and blueprints of the sites. Nelson's journals as the archaeologist on the Central Asiatic Expedition to Mongolia contain daily entries on his experiences and observations, some diagrams, charts, and field notes, 1925-1927. Also included are his site analyses, notes of his excavations, notes on the archaeological collection of the Museum, notes for a book about archaeology, general notes he made and maps and other material he collected about archaeology of the United States on a state-by-state basis with emphasis on California, manuscripts and bibliographic cards for some of his articles, notes referring to his pictograph studies in Europe and the American West, and notes on various topics in archaeology worldwide. Also, Nelson's personal correspondence with many anthropologists and others, 1897-1946.
